Generational, Ancestral and Family Curses. What are they and do they really exist?
Numbers 14:18 ‘The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression; but He will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generations.’
In this series, you will be surprised to find out who is cursed!! The first article in this series will define what the curse is and how it’s passed on. In the next, who is vulnerable, and finally how you can break the Curse
Jon Watkins Exposing Satanism May 17, 2015
A big thanks to Cynthia Pawl for editing, corrections and suggestions!
In my opinion, Yes, absolutely without a doubt, and there are two different curses that God’s people can incur. Number one is the Sin Nature coming from the original sin of Adam and Eve. No one can avoid the original sin. Second is Ancestral stuff acquired from worshiping false gods and adhering to false doctrine. Third, the unsaved that are involved in Satanism, Witchcraft, false religion with the worship of idols, or any other occult activity will directly result in an unsaved person becoming possessed, or at the very least, oppressed and cursed. The taking of blood oaths in a good ole boys club that has a false facade of doing good works will result in a curse, or demon possession, coming on a person. The Bible says “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23
Let’s deal with the Sin Nature of God’s people first, as that is what the majority do not want to deal with in the Church. The Word of God is written to His people and not the heathen, the unsaved. The Old Testament deals with Israel and its sin against God, not the heathen, those who chose to follow false gods.
We see this in 2nd Chronicles 7:13-14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.”
Note that He specifically addresses His people and says they are wicked and sinning. Many are ignorant and believe that the Old Testament has nothing to do with us today. They are in error. The Old Testament is a for-shadow that points to the New and the New Testament is the fulfillment of what the Old revealed. The heathen DID NOT pray to the True God but prayed to false gods and idols. In my next post, I will address, in more depth, the ancestral idolatry that was handed down to God’s people. In a later post, I will address Satanism, witchcraft and other occult activity.
What is the Sin Nature?
Have you ever done something that you were ashamed of afterward? Then, did you wonder what made you do it? You knew it was wrong, but there was an overwhelming desire, a force that seemed to take over, over powering your will it drove you to do what you knew was wrong. That very thing is happening, right now, to billions around the world! We all know individuals, or even families, who just seem continue to do the same things over and over. Unable to break the cycle. One or both parents may be drunks or drug addicts. Or, perhaps the children may be. There are whole families that steal and find themselves in and out prison. There are families that molest their own children or other people’s children. There are families where mother and daughters are prostitutes. There are those whose addictions drive them to steal or prostitute themselves to support their habit. There are families that have a gambling problem. There are families that have sex addictions, or who struggle with smoking, or even those who are habitual liars or cons. There are even families where a certain kind of disease or infirmity is passed down from generation to generation.
Medicine and science have proven this to be true. Yet, they have not found the real cause because they are not looking in the right place or through the right filter. John 5:14 ” Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” Paul wrote to the Corinthians about taking the Lords supper in an unworthy manner will result is sickness and even an early death. 1st Corinthians 11:29-30 ” For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 29 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.”
Now if that is not the description of a curse you tell me what is! Paul even pronounces that whoever does not preach the True Gospel will be accursed not once, but twice! Galatians 1:8-9 ” But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” Pretty strong words and straight to the point don’t you think?

A Generational, Ancestral or Family Curse is evidenced by a specific sin or a specific disease or malformity that is prevalent in a family line. Generational sin can be anything that dominates a persons thinking and lifestyle. The dominating sin, of present day, seems to be a bondage to sexual perversion be it homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, prostitution, pornography, lust, rape, in-breeding, incest, fornication (sex outside of marriage) and even a fixation and constant desire within marriage. The Bible even says if you look on a women with lust you have committed adultery! The same would be true for the ladies looking at a man with lust, or her dressing like a whore, which entices a man to look at her with lust! Matthew 5:27-28 ” Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”
Alcoholism or any other kind of chemical addiction, Stealing, Gambling, Depression, Multiple Personality Disorder or Bi-polar – like Jekyll and Hyde (if you don’t know what that is look here), Satanism, Witchcraft, Greed of any kind, ETC. ETC. (Yes, these are all passed down) Anything that consumes you, turns you away from God is sin and can be turned into a curse that is handed down from generation to generation.
You might say “I don’t have any of those and I don’t have any known sin”. Well congratulations, you have committed the sin (curse) of lying and have generated a new Familiar curse to be handed down to your children, if you’re planning to have any!! 1st John 1:8-10 ” If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him (God) a liar, and his word is not in us.”
Calling God a LIAR is not a smart thing to do folks. He will “visit” that sin down through your family line. In fact, if you said it or had that thought, I suspect it already has been handed down to you. Or, perhaps you’re just ignorant of what God’s word states! Either way, you had best repent! The Apostle Paul said in Romans 7:15 “For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.” Paul deals with sin and the sin nature in Romans chapters 6, 7 and 8.
You can break a generational, ancestral or family curse and that will be discussed a little later, in this series.
Rebellion and Disobedience – The first Sin resulting in the Sin Nature of Man.
The sin nature (a curse, in my thinking) has been handed down to every person that has ever been born. Call it a generational, ancestral, family curse, or whatever you chose to call it. Certain types of sin are prevalent down through family lines and that can’t be ignored. The only exception to this curse, the only one who was born sinless, was Jesus Christ because he was the seed of a woman and the Holy Spirit, i.e. God. Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. The sperm of a man is considered to be the seed. There is no reason to go into that here, so go look it up or take a biology class.
One should also take note that Satan has “seed”. No, Satan does not have physical seed. Some think that Satan and Eve had sex and produced children. Not true. ALL carnal and wicked people are called the children of, or the seed of Satan. John 6:70, John 8:44, Acts 13:10, 1st John 3:8. It should be noted however that angelic beings, “sons of God”, did somehow mingle with women as the account in Genesis chapter 6 states. Perhaps this was accomplished through genetic manipulation, (the same that is taking place this very day) which produced the giants, the Nephilim. The whole of the world became corrupted (except for Noah and his family) and that resulted in the flood and all human flesh being destroyed. It should also be noted there are demon spirits, incubus and succubus that come to a person while they are sleeping in order to have sex with them.
Genesis 4:1 ” And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.”
“And Adam knew Eve”, is a nice way of saying that Adam had sex with Eve. God told Adam and Eve to reproduce and replenish the earth. Genesis 1:28 ” And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” Cain’s physical father was Adam. His spiritual father was Satan because Cain’s mind and heart were given over to Satan’s carnal, rebellious way of thinking. All humans, since the fall of Adam and Eve, are “ Satan’s seed”, until they come to Christ. So long as a person rejects Christ, they are “ Satan’s seed” and hence are under a curse. The Good News is that curse is broken once you accept Jesus Christ.
Adams seed is the substance through which the sin nature, the curse, is handed down. There is only one way to reproduce, and that is for a man and a woman to come together to produce a baby. There is no other way although wicked scientists are trying, again through genetic manipulation, to accomplish this once again.
There are many who say there is no such thing as a generational curse. In truth, there are many scriptures and actual accounts, in both the Old and New Testaments, to prove and back it up. I believe these curses are the result of the original sin that occurred, in the Garden of Eden. When Adam and Eve fell due to disobeying God, that act set up the very first curses to come upon men and women.
The first curse recorded in the Bible
The very first curse, as recorded in Genesis, was spoken against the serpent, into which Satan had entered. This may be the origin of snakes, lizards and the like, as we know them today.
Genesis 3:13-15 ” And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
Many scholars believe that the Serpent did not appear as it does today. Some believe the serpent, one of many “beasts” in the garden, walked upright and was a beautiful creature to look at. It also had the ability to communicate. How else could it have talked to Eve and deceived her?
Genesis 3:1-5 ” Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he (the serpent) said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
We see in scripture that, indeed, the serpent and Eve conversed back and forth. Satan talked Eve into rebelling and disobeying God. It’s also believed, by some, that serpent was not evil and satan entered into the serpent, just to deceive Eve. This would indicate that the serpent had a will, and allowed itself to be used by Satan. Such was the case when Satan entered into Judas (Luke 22:3). This would also seem to be the case when the anti-Christ comes on the scene in the tribulation. Most say that Satan will enter into and possess the anti-Christ. I can’t find a scripture to confirm that and don’t think it is the case. They use Revelation 13:2 which states: “And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.”
It does not say that Satan will enter into the Beast, the anti-Christ, but it says the dragon, Satan, give him power and authority. Like wise, If Satan entered into the anti-Christ, they would be one person/entity. Verse 4 says that people worshiped the dragon who gave power to the beast. V4 “And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?” That is just a side note that has bothered me about what people are teaching. If anyone can show me scripture that says Satan will possess the anti-Christ I will accept it. Truly it does not matter, as Satan will greatly influence this person just like he does many who currently stand behind the pulpit!!!
The second curse is against Eve and all women after her. It was NOT the eating of the fruit itself that caused God to expel them out of the garden. It was the sin of rebellion which resulted in the sin nature that entered into them, and has been handed down to ALL who have ever lived since Adam and Eve.
Genesis 3:16 ” Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”
The word does not say directly that God placed a curse on Eve as He did on the serpent, but God does declare “I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. ” Sounds like a curse to me. In fact, this is the first mention of pain/sorrow in the Bible.
The third curse is upon Adam. Because of his rebellion man has to labor all the days of his life scratching a living out of the earth. As with Eve, the word does not directly say Adam is cursed, but the ground he is to till and grow food from is. Again in my thinking it’s the same thing.
Genesis 3:17-19 ” And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”
Like Father, Like Son.
The fourth is the curse on Cain which God’s word does state
Genesis 4:11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand;
Cain sinned greatly just as his parents did. That curse/sin was handed down to him. He chose NOT to serve God and instead served the flesh and Satan. He too was to scratch out a meager living from the soil. Verse 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth
You reap what you have sown
Those who choose to serve God are spared a direct curse from God, but the sin nature is always present and, at any time, can rear its ugly head. Even the most righteous person, the best that God has, can sin against Him. You don’t believe it? Then read the book of Job or get into 1st and 2nd Samuel and read about the life of David. In fact, read the entirety of the Old Testament and you will see that All of the men God had chosen failed him in one way or another. We also reap what we sow. If, all we have sown is evil and wickedness, then that is what we will reap. If we sow goodness and righteousness, then that is what we reap.. Galatians 6:7 ” Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
I am still reaping some of what I had sown from my youth until this very day and so are you. I handed down my rebellion and sin nature to my children and so did you. Just take a look at their behavior and the things they do. You will recognize some of the same things in them that you were in you, when you were their age. There may be exceptions, just as demonstrated in the character of Able, the son of Adam and Eve. He served God and the Bible reveals that Able was not rebellious as his brother Cain. Also, in scripture, we see that Cain begat Enoch (Genesis 6:17) who was a Godly man. Follow the line of Cain though, and you will indeed find that Cain’s iniquity was passed down through his family line. You will find many stories of some very wicked offspring that were produced.
The sin nature is the fleshly desire and is a very powerful force for a lack of better words. It’s those fleshly desires that get us to commit sin and hence results in a curse. For instance. I know that my iniquity, my perversions, were handed down from grand-fathers and grand-mothers, father and mother, to me and my siblings. We all have the same tendencies to the same iniquities! How did that come to be? Exodus 20:5 gives us the answer to that question and it states; Genesis 20:5 ” Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;”
Note that God says he will “visit”, meaning he will allow “the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” You say I don’t hate God nor did my parents. Do you follow ALL of his commandments? Are you a perfect person with no evil desires, thoughts or actions? The answer is a resounding “No”, and that is why God sent Jesus to die on the Cross for our sins. What Jesus did on that Cross is the only thing that can take away sin. The sacrifice in the Old Testament, the blood of bulls, goats etc., only covered sin. When Jesus shed His blood our sin was taken away. However, you must believe, repent, and accept Jesus and what he did for you in order to have those sins, those curses taken away. The next verse tells us that God extends His mercy, His Grace to those who love Him and does what He says.
The majority of the church does not want to be delivered from sin. Most are happy to hold on to the things that curse them and will send them to hell. They want to keep riding the fence , one foot in the world and one in a false sense of salvation. But there is no fence riding in the kingdom of God.
And then God states (in verse six, shown below) how to break that curse off of yourself. It should be noted that you can only stop the curse for yourself personally. Everyone is responsible for their own actions and own sin. When you repent and change direction, your actions decisions do NOT extend to your children or other family members! Be encouraged though. You can lessen the odds and even cancel an ancestral curse to prevent it from being handed down to your children. That is of course, if you address this issue before they are conceived. This is another topic I will address more fully in a future post.
Genesis 20:6 ” And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
Many think, as I did, that once you come to Christ, all will be rosy and your troubles will vanish. Oh friend, you are in for one big surprise! Remember the sowing and reaping principle above? Once you have seen the light and Holy Spirit comes into your life and turns it around, that is when Satan will begin to work on you 24/7 and that sin nature will rear its ugly head. You WILL fail, you WILL stumble and you WILL commit sin, but that Grace and Mercy that you received when you became a child of God is there. The Holy Spirit will convict you of wrong doing and if you repent, God will forgive you every time.
Too many people believe that their worldly success and apparent blessings are evidence that they are favored of God, despite their sin. They believe that there is no consequence for their sin. In their “sloppy Agape” belief system, they can get away with sin. Because, they reason, God is loving and forgiving, no matter what they do. Surely the blood of Jesus covers all… right? Well, I submit to you, my brothers and sisters, if you are seeing some things in your life that are not pleasing to the Lord, and yet you appear to be living the “good Life, reconsider. It would behoove you to pause here and reexamine from whence those blessings truly originate. See Blessings – where are yours coming from?
If you go to the store to buy Meat, don't run to the Milk section or the Junk Food aisle looking for it!!
The Meat Section is the True Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Milk Section is likened to those who will not preach on sin and Hell, just a feel good message, the Social gospel.
The Junk Food Isle is the outright false doctrine AKA the prosperity gospel, name it and claim it, the Hebraic Roots movement and other false teachings!!
Feasting on just Milk and Junk will eventually cause you great harm, you can count on it!!
